Research on the protection and exploitation of genetic resources of Jiaohe black goats

Abstract:

Jiaohe black goat is a newly discovered precious local goat genetic resource identified during the Third National Survey of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources in the Jiaohe River Basin. Through field investigations, population measurements, interviews with farmers, and preliminary performance tests, this report systematically elaborates on the discovery process, distribution area, body conformation and appearance characteristics, growth and development performance, reproductive performance, and meat production potential of this breed. The results show that Jiaohe black goat is primarily characterized by an entirely black coat, moderate body size, well-proportioned structure, and sturdy constitution. Notable traits include early sexual maturity, stable reproductive performance, tolerance to coarse feed, strong disease resistance, adaptation to the warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate and mountainous/hilly terrain of the Jiaodong Peninsula, as well as tender meat with a mild odor. Preliminary evaluation suggests that Jiaohe black goat is a valuable local meat-type genetic resource with significant conservation value and development potential. Currently, shortcomings exist in conservation systems, industrial development, and policy support. It is recommended to strengthen conservation systems, build characteristic brands, and improve policy support.
